What Every Model Should Know about Sugar

Models Direct take every effort to provide quality information on fitness and health; encouraging beneficial ways of staying on top of your shape and having a sustainable life style. After the binge eating of chocolate and sweets over the festive period, the team at Models Direct thought it would be a great idea to look at some (harsh!) facts about sugar and compiled this article in the hope that you can learn something that can benefit your day to day, whether you are a model or not. In the UK, obesity and type 2 diabetes are on the rise year on year. It has been observed that this may correlate with an increase in caffeine consumption. Sugar consumption is directly linked to coffee drinking. Scientists say that sugar is the most damaging component of the modern day diet!

Sugar contains no nutrients. It is also devastating to tooth enamel. You have probably heard this a lot before, but it is so easy to forget when you’re out and about on your day. Everything these days has added sugar and its nearly impossible to avoid it. Even fruit waters are 5-10 percent sugars. The worst types of sugars are sucrose and high fructose corn syrup. These do your body absolutely no good. They don’t contain any proteins, fats, vitamins or minerals. They are just instant energy and it is for this reason that they are called empty calories. If you have 400 calories per day worth of sugars, and only eat 2000 calories, you will still experience malnutrition as if you had only consumed 1600 and lost out on essential vitamins and nutrients. Sugar is also devastating on the liver. It enters the blood through the digestive system and is broken down. The resulting simple sugars are called glucose and fructose.

You will know these names but perhaps not what they do, what they are used for and what too much of them can do to us. There is one major difference between them, glucose exists in every cell of every living thing on the planet. If we don’t consume it, our bodies actually produce it for us. Fructose is not produced by the body because we don’t need it. Fructose can only be used by our livers in small amounts, when there is an excess it converts it to glycogen and holds on to it until it is needed. If it fills up though, and you have far too much fructose too often then it turns it into fat. A fatty liver can become a serious health concern in the medium term. Remember that sugars in fruits are not under this bracket. Fruit juices on the other hand might have added sugars to over sweeten a sour harvest. The rule is to read the label and make a conscious effort to change old habits for the better.
